Antidepressants are psychotropic medicinal substances mostly used for the relief or prevention of depression. The application of antidepressants improves person’s condition, betters their mood, increases brain’s activity, relieves from tiredness, sluggishness, and tension and you won’t be bothered by various fears and anxieties, and you will be able to live a normal, calm life.
Antidepressants are available in a great amount of drugs, which are divided in various categories. There are three main categories:
- - TCAs (Tricyclic antidepressants);
- - MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors);
- - SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).
Tricyclic have a more calming and stimulating effect; MAOIs mostly induce mood improvement by suppression of negative emotions; SSRIs are the most up-to-date drugs, which don’t have side effects and are simple in use, but are fairly expensive.
Antidepressants have other uses along with depression treatment. Due to their wide range of effects, these drugs are also often used in the treatment of other mental disorders, such as anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, and somatic disorders.
Antidepressants have fairly long-lasting effects, but they don’t ensue immediately. Hence, the treatment can often drag on for several weeks.
